Chefs-in-schools is an initiative of Chefsville, a non-profit corporation in North Texas, serving the DFW metroplex. Since 2009, we have worked with over 250,000 students in several school districts.
On May 13, 2010 Assistant White House Chef and Food Initiative Coordinator, Sam Kass announced “Chefs Move to Schools” Program. Our 1st Lady started the groundbreaking of the White House Kitchen Garden more than a year ago, educating students about planting seeds, harvesting vegetables, about health and nutrition.
The 1st Lady started a discussion on the role food plays in living a healthy life. The discussion grew into the Let’s Move! campaign and like the garden – it just keeps on growing!
The Chefs Move to Schools program is an opportunity for chefs around the country to adopt a local school to help solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. In the words of the Mrs. Obama:
“We are going to need everyone’s time and talent to solve the childhood obesity epidemic and our Nation’s chefs have tremendous power as leaders on this issue because of their deep knowledge of food and nutrition and their standing in the community. I want to thank them for joining the Let’s Move! Campaign.
Chefsville program, Chefs in School, will pair chefs with North Texas schools. These chefs will come to local schools to bring fun to fruits and vegetables, and teach kids about food, nutrition and cooking in an engaging way. These chefs will further work with school food service employees, administrators and teachers — chefs can help deliver these messages from the cafeteria to the classroom.
The results are incredible! Parents are letting kids into their kitchens to help in meal preparation. Kids are having more quality time with the adults they live with while receiving the kind of attention that they crave. Families are becoming closer as they learn skills making them more functional. Students are more engaging in the classroom achieving better grades and greater focus. Chefsville’s Chefs have heard hundreds of stories that show impact in the communities regarding kid’s health and well being.
